learning to make lead-generating content

It all began a few years ago. Like every marketer at an early-stage startup, I was fighting the content battle. The volume vs. quality battle. The I-just-spent-sixteen-hours-on-this-blog-post vs. the it-has-the-lifespan-of-a-tweet battle. And I was losing.

I had committed to the SaaS startup mantra of #leadsbeforesleep, but I didn’t know how to turn the content we had into leads much less relationships.

Here’s what I did know:

  • People in StartupLand are figuring things out together, and if you have something helpful to say, buyers will remember you for it
  • We’re visual learners, meaning the best way to make an  impression is with high-impact visuals
  • Freebies only build trust if they feel valuable
  • Creating good content takes time

At the time, an ebook seemed like something to do. 

And did it ever. Our 62-page lead magnet on PQLs not only generated leads like no other content effort we had done, but it got people talking about us and gave us months of cross-platform content.
